Teachers have probably one of the most underappreciated jobs in the world. As a former teacher myself, I can vouch that so much goes into teaching a class apart from just knowing the subject matter – preparing lesson plans, sourcing supplementary materials, planning for different learning types, getting to know new students every semester.
And what do teachers often get in return for their efforts? Attitude from students and yelling from parents, most likely.
However, being a teacher can also be extremely gratifying.
There are few things that can compare to the satisfaction of seeing your students fully understand something you taught them! Making a difference in a student’s life, whether on matters inside or outside of the classroom, can change your life, too.
It’s this theme that is central to one of ABC’s newest upcoming comedies, Abbott Elementary.
After being hailed early in the season as a standout show, Abbott Elementary was officially picked up to series by the network just this past May 2021, and it’s slated to premiere as a midseason entry for the 2021-2022 season.
Without further ado, here’s everything we know so far about ABC’s upcoming comedy series, Abbott Elementary.
Who’s in charge?
Abbott Elementary was created by writer, comedian, and actress Quinta Brunson (A Black Lady Sketch Show), who will also serve as writer and executive producer.
Alongside her as executive producers are Justin Halpern and Patrick Schumacker under the Delicious Non-Sequitur Productions Banner.
The production studios on the project include Warner Bros. Television and 20th Television as a part of Disney Television Studios.
As for the pilot episode, Brunson has been credited as writer and Randall Einhorn as its director.
What’s Abbott Elementary about?
Abbott Elementary will take viewers to a Philadelphia public school, where we’ll meet a “slightly tone-deaf” principal and a group of passionate – albeit “outnumbered and underfunded” – teachers.
It’s no secret that the American public school system leaves much to be desired, particularly when it comes to the actual well-being, success, and education of its students. However, despite having to deal with these less than ideal circumstances, the teachers of Abbott Elementary are determined to make the best out of what they have to help their students still succeed in life.
Not long after Abbott Elementary was picked up to series, ABC released its first look trailer which you can check out below, and it looks like it could be a mockumentary-type format!
Who will we see in Abbott Elementary?
Quinta Brunson is not only one of the brilliant minds behind the show, but she’s also one of the faces we’ll see on the forefront of it! She stars as Janine Teagues, who we see in the first trailer as one of the 2nd Grade teachers.
Tyler James Williams (The Walking Dead, Everybody Hates Chris) will play Gregory Eddie, one of the newcomers to the school.
Writer and comedian Janelle James will play Ava Coleman, the school’s new principal. With Chris Perfetti (Looking) as Jacob Hill, Lisa Ann Walter (The Parent Trap) as Emily Schemmenti and Sheryl Lee Ralph (Fam) as Barbara Howard – Janine’s fellow teachers at the school.
ABC’s Abbott Elementary will premiere on Tuesday, December 7th at 9:30/8:30 central. And then will return on Tuesday, January 4th in its regular timeslot of 9/8 central.
