Although CBS is famous for their action and drama shows, they also know how to do good comedy. And this year they are launching another one. Will The Neighborhood become a hit or flop within the already saturated half-hour comedy niche? Time will only tell. But for now, let’s take a look at what’s The Neighborhood all about.
Who’s in charge?
The Neighborhood is written and executive produced by Jim Reynolds. Alongside him, Aaron Kaplan, Wendi Trilling, Dana Honor, Cedric Rhone, and Eric Rhone are also executive producing this new series. With Kapital Entertainment, TrillTV, A Bird And A Bear Entertainment and CBS TV Studios producing the comedy. And James Burrows directing the pilot episode.
What’s this show about?
This new CBS comedy centers on Calvin Butler and his family, who have been proud members of their surrounding African-American community for over 30 years. But, when a new family from Michigan suddenly relocates to their LA neighborhood and moves into the house next to them, hijinks ensues. Because Calvin does not appreciate their new overly-friendly neighbors, who, in return, just want to fit in and therefore have taken their neighborliness to a whole new level.
Who’s playing who?
Despite the fact that The Neighborhood is a sure thing since CBS has handed out a series order for the show, just recently some major changes have been happening within the cast of this new series. But first, let’s start with those cast members that haven’t changed. At the forefront of this new series will be Cedric the Entertainer playing the patriarch of the Butler family. He’s a proud man who fears that the new neighbors will be the downfall of their neighborhood. His wife Loretta, who’s devoted to her faith, will be played by Tichina Arnold. While Calvin and Loretta’s two sons Marty and Malcolm will be portrayed by Marcel Spears and Sheaun McKinney respectively. Marty is the elder son, an engineer working at Jet Propulsion Laboratory and is described as having a friendlier attitude towards their new neighbors than the rest of his family. While Malcolm is the younger, street-smart son who’s into some shady business dealings.
Opposing the Butler family Beth Behrs and Max Greenfield star as Gemma and Dave Johnson, the new neighbors. In the original pilot episode, these roles were played by Dreama Walker and Josh Lawson. But after two major recastings due to a new creative direction for the show, they were handed to Behrs and Greenfield. The latter reportedly being the show’s behind-the-scenes team’s top choice to being with. Gemma is a teacher who is the reason the Johnson family moves to LA since she accepted a teaching position in Pasadena. While Dave is a conflict resolution expert whose extreme friendliness isn’t really that welcome in their new LA neighborhood.
