Fox’s Call Me Kat: Release Date, Cast, Trailer & More

We all grew up in a society that constantly pressured us to conform to its standards – in beauty, success, marriage, family, and well, pretty much everything.

These days, however, nonconformity has started to gain some traction. We’re pretty lucky to have the freedom to live our lives the way we want: getting married later in life (or not at all), focusing on careers instead of marriage, having multiple piercings and tattoos without the stigma, or starting your own business!

This is precisely what Fox’s new show, Call Me Kat, brings to the forefront – that we don’t need to subscribe to traditional societal values of marriage and a family in order to be perfectly happy.

A series commitment was given to the project back in September 2019 under its then-title, Carla. Filming had already begun by the time of the industry-wide shutdown but it still received a straight to series order, at which point the show had already been renamed to Call Me Kat.

Here’s what we know about the new half-hour sitcom coming to Fox in 2021!

Who’s in charge?

Call Me Kat is based on the British sitcom Miranda, a semi-autobiographical series by actress and comedian, Miranda Hart. Unsurprisingly, Hart will now be serving as executive producer alongside Angie Stephenson through BBC Studios.

Joining her as executive producers are Jim Parsons and Todd Spiewak under That’s Wonderful Productions (with Eric Norsoph as producer), and Mayim Bialik and Darlene Hunt under Sad Clown Productions (with Mackenzie Gabriel-Vaught as producer).

The series has been reported to be a co-production of Fox Entertainment and Warner Bros. TV.

What’s the comedy series about?

Titular character Kat is a 39-year-old woman who, according to Fox’s official plot snippet, “struggles every day against society and her mother to prove that she can still live a happy and fulfilling life despite still being single at 39.”

Determined to show her mother that happiness doesn’t come from having everything you want in life, she decides to use the money her parents had set aside for her wedding to open a cat cafe in Louisville, Kentucky. Things take an interesting turn, however, when a former crush comes back into the picture!

Who’s starring in Call Me Kat?

Apart from executive producing the show, Mayim Bialik (The Big Bang Theory) was cast in the role of Kat when the show was given a series commitment.

Next to be cast was Kat’s narcissistic mother Sheila, who will be played by Swoosie Kurtz (Man with a Plan), and one of her cafe employees Randi, to be played by Kyla Pratt (Let’s Stay Together).

Cheyenne Jackson (American Horror Story) was cast to play Max, Kat’s former crush and bartender at The Middle C, the piano bar across the street from Kat’s cafe. And Julian Gant (Good Girls) will play Max’s friend and the bar’s owner, Carter.

Lastly, Phil, the pastry chef at Kat’s cat cafe who’s recovering from a break-up with his long-time partner, will be played by Leslie Jordan (The Cool Kids, American Horror Story).

On top of that, TV Insider has also reported that Lamorne Morris from New Girl and Woke will have a guest role in the upcoming series!

Fox’s Call Me Kat is set to premiere on Sunday, January 3, 2021 at 8/7 central!
