All American

Sports dramas are one of the lesser-explored TV show genres. But every so often a new one pops up that has the potential of becoming the next Friday Night Lights. And this season it’s The CW’s All American. So if you want to find out more about this upcoming TV drama then keep on reading!

Who’s in charge?

On the behind-the-scenes side of things, this upcoming new series comes from April Blair, who wrote and is executive producing All American. Also among the executive producers are Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter as well as Robbie Rogers and Rob Hardy. With the latter directing the pilot episode of the show. While the production studios for All American are Berlanti Productions and Warner Bros. Television.

What’s this show about?

Based on the life of professional football player Spencer Paysinger, All American will tell the story of Spencer James. An up-and-coming football player from Crenshaw High in South L.A. who gets an offer to play for Beverly Hills High. So now Spencer not only has to keep up his A+ student status and prove his skills to the new team. But also figure out how to live and thrive in this new world he has found himself in that is vastly different from his previous South Los Angeles lifestyle.

Who’s playing who?

Now on to the on-screen talent that we will be seeing on All American. The show’s lead character Spencer will be portrayed by Daniel Ezra. He’s smart, charming and talented, but after he transfers schools even Spencer finds it challenging to deal with how different life in Beverly Hills is to his previous life in Compton. Karimah Westbrook will be taking on the role of Grace James, Spencer’s strong and loving mother who works as a courthouse clerk and loves the idea of Spencer getting a chance to get out of their bad neighborhood and shine both academically and on the football field in his new school. While Spencer’s little brother Dillon will be played by Jalyn Hall.

Also starring in this new The CW drama will be Taye Diggs as Beverly Hills High school’s varsity football coach Billy Baker. Who takes in Spencer once he accepts the offer to play for Beverly Hills High. With Monet Mazur playing his wife Laura Fine-Baker. She’s high-powered lawyer on her way to becoming the next District Attorney. Michael Evans Behling playing Jordan Baker. Billy and Laura’s son and the current captain of Beverly’s football team. Who is not fond of Spencer coming to live with them. And Samantha Logan portraying Olivia Baker, Jordan’s sister who becomes fast friends with Spencer, since they both feel like outcasts in Beverly Hills High school.

Bre-Z also is among the cast of All American, portraying Spencer’s best friend Tiana “Coop” Cooper. Who although is losing her friend and protector at South Crenshaw High when Spencer transfers, is still supportive of her friend. While Greta Onieogou and Cody Christian will play two of Spencer’s classmates at the elite school. Onieogou will star as Leila Faisal, a seemingly confident student of Beverly High who might not be so perfect after all. While Christian was cast as the school’s golden-boy Asher who’s hiding a troubled home life and feels threatened by Spencer.

The latest on All American

Ever since first hearing about All American there was little doubt that this project won’t get green-lit. But when The CW handed out a series order for the upcoming drama it became official, All American will be seen on our TV screens this fall. In fact, it will air on Wednesday nights at 10/9 central, with the show premiering on October 10.
