Nancy Drew is probably one of the most well-known pop-culture names of the 20th century, with the books originating in the 1930s and so many more book, TV show, and movie adaptations coming since then. And now, it looks like the popularity and influence of this iconic character are about to continue into the 21st century, too.
Aspiring detectives and fellow mystery lovers can rejoice that another Nancy Drew remake is coming soon. This time brought to us by The CW.
The network announced the production development back in September 2018. And in May 2019 the new Nancy Drew project was picked up to series. It’s set to debut on Wednesday, October 9 at 9/8 central. With an encore presentation the following Monday on October 14.
Who’s behind The CW’s Nancy Drew?
Nancy Drew’s writers and creators are Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage. Both of whom were on the team behind The O.C. and Gossip Girl. Which means that fans of these shows can expect a rollercoaster ride of drama and intrigue in this new series as well!
Joining them as executive producers are Noga Landau, also a writer for the show, and known for Tau and The Magicians. As well as Melinda Hsu Taylo, and Lis Rowinski. While the pilot was directed by Larry Teng (Arrow, Supergirl).
What’s the story?
When The CW released the first trailer, one thing we immediately noticed is how reminiscent it is of Riverdale: dark, ominous, and full of mystery and drama. The difference is, Nancy Drew has always had underlying tones of the supernatural – with a rational explanation.

You can definitely expect to see a lot of sleuthing around because it wouldn’t be Nancy Drew without it. In this remake, Nancy is an 18-year old fresh out of high school but having to put her college plans on hold.
While working at a diner, she finds herself wrapped up in another mystery as she and her friends end up witnesses – and suspects – to a murder. With their help, she launches into an investigation of her own, much to the chagrin of the local police force!
Who has been cast?
The casting announcements were made in early 2019 and feature a relative newcomer as the title character, Kennedy McMann. Joining her on the screen will be Tunji Kasim as Ned Nickerson, Nancy’s love interest. And Scott Wolf (Party of Five, Everwood) as her father, Carson Drew.
Here’s an interesting tidbit. The role of Nancy’s father was originally to be played by 90s heartthrob Freddie Prinze, Jr. But he was replaced by Wolf shortly after the show was ordered to series.
Other supporting roles will be played by Alex Saxon (The Fosters, Finding Carter), Leah Lewis, Maddison Jaizani, and Riley Smith. Pamela Sue Martin has a guest role in the pilot episode, which is a nod to the original The Hardy Boys/Nancy Drew Mysteries series, as Martin was the titular character in the show.
Who should watch it?
If you’re a fan of mysteries – or just Nancy Drew herself – this is definitely a show you wouldn’t want to miss. Find out how Nancy Drew solves this latest murder mystery on October 9th, only on The CW.
