If in previous episodes quite a lot of things were happening simultaneously then Supergirl season 2 episode 11 seemed more concentrated on just one, a white Martian attack. No wonder the episode was titled “The Martian Chronicles”. So let’s get to the review.
Warning, spoilers ahead!
Baddie of the week
After J’onn saved M’gann from mind control in episode 10, she told J’onn, that White Martians were looking for her and will soon arrive on Earth to make her answer for the things she did back on Mars. And we didn’t have to wait long for it, since in Supergirl season 2 episode 11, we saw just that. White Martians came for M’gann, and Alex, Kara, J’onn, Winn and M’gann tried to stop that from happening.
What I liked about this episode was that the main fight happened inside the DEO, after J’onn locked it down, trapping the White Martians inside. It was interesting to see the team navigate their own space, but it was even better thanks to the whole we-don’t-know-who-the-Martian-is twist.
Since White Martins can shapeshift, one of them came to the DEO assuming her skin, to make M’gann turn herself over to them, by threatening to kill Kara and J’onn. However, when the real M’gann walked into the room, they quickly realized, that one of them is an impostor. A fight broke out, but when the lights went out for just a second and came back on, they realized, that they did not know who from those in the room the White Martian is.
So began a game of guessing, who is the White Martian, which ended up revealing that both Winn and Alex were captured and the Martians were impersonating them. So Kara, J’onn and M’gann had to fight the Martians, while the real defused DEO’s reactor that was threatening to blow up the DEO and the blocks around it. In the end, the good guys won, of course, but still it made for an exciting and thrilling episode that was more like a mini thriller or action movie than a Supergirl episode.
Relationships in this episode
Besides this sequence, we also saw glimpses of relationships between different pairings.
With Kara we saw her talking to Mon-El about his confession and realizing that she might actually like him as well. Only to be discouraged by seeing Mon-El going on a date with another woman at the end of Supergirl season 2 episode 11. Then we also saw a little bit of Kara and Winn’s relationship, as Winn confronted her about, if she still doesn’t support his and James’s hobby. And of course, we cannot forget the whole Kara’s Earth birthday thing and Alex blowing her off to go to a concert with Maggie, and how all that affected Kara.
Speaking of Alex, we also caught another glimpse of her and Maggie’s evolving relationship. Although nothing major happened between the two in this episode, it was still nice to see Alex and Maggie just hanging out and being in a relationship. At least one of the shows couples is happy at the moment.
And lastly, we also saw a relationship developing between J’onn and M’gann, only to be cut short by M’ganns decision to go back to Mars to find those White Martians, who think like her, not like the rest of her species. From the moment M’gann was introduced, I thought that she will eventually become a love-interest for J’onn. And that was essentially what happened in this episode, only in a much star-crossed way. Hopefully, M’gann will be back from her quest by the end of the season and J’onn will be able to enjoy a bit of happiness as well.
Last thoughts of Supergirl season 2 episode 11
Is it just me or you also saw that something isn’t quite right with Kara? Ever since she found out about James being the Guardian and Mon-El’s feelings for her, she has seemed off. Sad, maybe a little angry or scared, and definitely off. Which makes me wonder, if this is an indication that in the future something big will happen to Kara that will change her life drastically. And it also makes me wish for the happy Kara to come back, because you could always count on her brightening up the sometimes dramatic episodes of Supergirl.
