After a heartbreaking and the blingy Supergirl/The Flash musical crossover episode, we were back to regular Supergirl episodes this week. However, this episode didn’t disappoint either. Especially in terms of bad-ass fights and unexpected twists. So let’s see what happened on Supergirl season 2 episode 17.
Warning, spoilers ahead!
Baddy of the week
Lately, Supergirl has strayed away from their regular baddy-of-the-week structure in favor of villains, who are more just some new and random threat to National City. And the same was exploited in Supergirl season 2 episode 17 as well because this week’s bad guy was no other than Mon-El’s mom, Rhea.
On last week’s episode, Kara finally found out who Mon-El really is. And after some interesting events, she also forgave Mon-El for lying and all was good between them. But apparently, Reah didn’t take the fact that Mon-El told them that he is staying on Earth and that they should leave so lightly. So she, thinking that Kara was to blame for all of it, decided to take matters into her own hands and put a space-wide bounty on Kara’s head. And boy did it work.
At first, an alien with a laser eye patch disturbed Kara and Mon-El’s peaceful morning. Then another alien bounty hunter with the ability to control other people’s bodies disturbed Kara, Winn, James and Mon-El’s game night by making Mon-El fight her. And it all culminated in a battle between Kara and Reah on the Daxamite’s ship after Kara went there to save Mon-El, who previously agreed to go with his parents if they left Kara alone.
Kara, of course, won with the help of J’onn, Mon-El, Winn and Alex, but it looks like the threat of Rhea isn’t going away anytime soon. So it looks like instead of Cadmus, Reah, the Queen of Daxam will be the big bad for Supergirl season 2.
The Daxamites
But the fights and battles aside, I wanted to take a moment and talk about Mon-El’s parents, because we only got a glimpse of them in the previous episode. Luckily, during Supergirl season 2 episode 17, we got a better grasp of what Reah and Lar Gand are like. And it turns out that Daxamite men have no problem of letting their ladies lead, as Reah clearly is the alfa in her marriage.
At first, Mon-El’s parents seemed like fairly normal people, who just want their son back, but we very quickly realized that it was not the case. Especially for Reah, who was ready to do anything to have her son by her side, even kill the woman he loves or imprison Mon-El himself. And that really came into play this episode when she attacked Kara with Kryptonite infused weapons and when she killed her own husband because in her mind he betrayed her when Lar Gand stopped the fight.
So it will be very interesting to see the final showdown between Reah and Supergirl if she indeed is the big bad. And it will also be interesting to see if Mon-El will be part of that fight, just as J’onn helped Kara in her fight against Non and Indigo in season 1 finale.
Ex’s and oh’s
In the other storyline department, on Supergirl season 2 episode 17 we saw some trouble in paradise for Alex and Maggie aka Sanvers. After a yoga class and some quips about being that couple, they met Maggie’s ex-girlfriend, Emily. And you would expect that it bought some complications to Alex and Maggie’s relationship, as it many times does in real life too. However, this time Maggie not Alex was responsible for the complications.
Alex, thinking that it was the nice thing to do, invited Emily to dinner with her and Maggie, however, Emily stood them up. And that led to Alex confronting Emily after Maggie told Alex, that Emily had said that Maggie doesn’t deserve to be happy at the end of their relationship. But that was only half the truth. Less than half even, because Maggie actually had cheated on Emily, which earned those harsh words from Emily and also was the reason why their relationship ended. However, when Maggie confirmed that that was, in fact, the truth, Alex surprised Maggie and all of us again.
Instead of being angry at Maggie, judging her for cheating or losing trust in her, Alex just told Maggie that Maggie should have told her the truth earlier. Alex made Maggie see that the pattern of keeping things to herself that Maggie had established is not healthy for their relationship. And that Maggie should stop distrusting Alex, because Alex would never judge her, just help her heal. Which is not only a beautiful way to put it but also something I think many people who are in any type of relationship could learn from.
Last thoughts on Supergirl season 2 episode 17
Lastly, I wanted to also mention how happy I am that Kara and Mon-El are a couple again and seems to be stronger than ever. They proved their love for each other in Supergirl season 2 episode 17 when Mon-El sacrificed himself to save Kara from his mother and when Kara went after Mon-El knowing full well that Reah still had Kryptonite weapons. And hopefully, nothing will disrupt this great relationship, at least not for a couple of episodes, because they both deserve to be happy for longer than a couple of moments.
Unfortunately, we will have to wait until April 24 to see if that is the case. But with only five episodes left in Season 2 of Supergirl and a confirmed season 3, I think we can handle the wait. It will only make seeing what happened next sweeter.

Quotes of the episode:
Kara: “Any word from your parents?”
Mon-El: “No. They’re just up there, hovering around in orbit. Is that what they mean by helicopter parenting?”Mon-El: “And since you asked, I too think that you should hide, cause I just lost you, don’t really feel like losing you again, because that would not be palatable.”
Winn: “Hey, that’s a very culinary way to put it.”
Mon-El: “I cook now.”
