Supergirl Season 2 Episode 13 Review

Love was in the air on the last Supergirl episode and we saw more than one character find their own brand of romance on the new Supergirl episode. So let’s recap Supergirl season 2 episode 13 and see what romance I am talking about.

Warning, spoilers ahead!

Baddie of the week

This Supergirl episode was different from the others because this time around the baddie that Kara was facing actually was also her sort-of love interest. We already met Mr. Mxyzptlk or Mxy at the end of episode 12, but on Supergirl season 2 episode 13, we saw the real extent of his powers and what he intends to do with them on Earth.

So early on in the episode, we found out that Mixy is a magical imp from the fifth dimension, who came to Earth to marry Kara. But since Kara wasn’t about to marry Mxy, and making Kara fall in love with him went beyond Mxyzptlik’s powers, Mxy decided to take matters into his own hands. He started to wreak havoc in National City. First, he tried to help Kara stop a robbery by almost shooting the robbers, and then he brought The Parasite back to life. Needless to say, it didn’t impress Kara.

It actually made her want to send Mxy back to his dimension quicker and it even drove a wedge between Kara and Mon-El, who was trying to protect Kara from Mxyzptlik. In the end, Kara out tricked the trickster and got Mxy to write his name backward, which was the only way to send him back to his dimension without killing him. So Mxyzptlik went back where he came from with Kara’s wise advice about how you can’t force love following him.

I have to say that although this story line might sound crazy on the paper, it somehow worked for the show and for this particular episode. It was both entertaining and had some truly heartfelt moments. Which made for the perfect Valentine’s Day special.

Karamel complications

As I mentioned before, with the arrival of Mxyzptlk came complications between Kara and Mon-El. At the very end of the last episode, we saw them almost kiss, only to be interrupted by Mxy showing up in Kara’s loft. But no matter how much we wished for them to continue their moment and finally start their romantic relationship, we had to wait until the end of Supergirl season 2 episode 13 to see that.

Since Mon-El knew what Mxy was and had dealt with creatures like him on Daxam, he was convinced that the only way to get Mxy out of there was to kill him. But Kara disagreed, which created a rift between them. So much so that Kara had to lie to him and tell him that she doesn’t want to be with him, to get Mon-El to stand down and give Kara the freedom to go defeat Mxy.

In the end, Kara confessed Mon-El that she lied to him and they finally shared the kiss that Mxy interrupted, but it was a really slow build to that moment. Hopefully, they won’t break up that soon, because I have waited for them to be together for quite some time. So here’s to Karamel finally happening.

Love is in the air

Speaking of Valentine’s Day, it seems that love and romance were the common themes of Supergirl season 2 episode 13 because Kara and Mon-El weren’t the only ones, who experience romance and affection in this episode.

Firstly, Alex and Maggie had their first Valentine’s Day together. However, everything didn’t go as smooth as Alex had hoped for, as Maggie confessed that she hates Valentine’s Day. But after Alex’s failed attempt to Valentine’s Day surprise and Maggie’s confession about the real reason why she hates Valentine’s Day, Maggie (with Kara’s help) realized how stupid she was and surprised Alex with her very own grand gesture – Valentine’s Day a prom. It was a beautiful scene and it also fortified the relationship that is building between Alex and Maggie.

Secondly, in this episode, Winn also finally found some love and romance in his life. After he almost got beat up by an alien, Lyra, a warrior from Star Haven saved him. And they ended up going to dinner and sleeping together. So it seems like Winn might finally have some romantic scenes on this show as well. Which definitely is a welcome change. And if we can get more scenes with him and Lyra, that is only an added bonus.

Last thoughts on Supergirl season 2 episode 13

It is no secret that there is an amazing chemistry between Kara and Mon-El. And this episode was no different. From their fight in the DEO to Kara breaking up with him and then later telling Mon-El that she lied to him. These scenes were just magic. You could feel the tension and connection through the screen, so I hope that they don’t decide to write Mon-El off the show anytime soon because I live for the scenes between the two of them.

Episode highlights:

• Kara’s stunning wedding dress
• Mxy poofing Mon-El to DEO in his underwear
• J’onn sending a message to M’gann
• Mon-El being the overprotective boyfriend
• Lyra saving Winn
• Winn and Lyra dating
• how Kara tricked Mxy to writing his name backward
• Kara admitting to Mon-El that she tricked him too and their kiss

Episode let-downs:

• Maggie being against Valentin’s Day
• Mon-El not trusting Kara to defeat Mxy
• Mxy trying to get Kara to marry him by forcing her hand

Quote of the episode:
Kara: “Okay, I’m flattered, but I’m not going to marry you, Mxyzptlk.”
Mr. Mxyzptlk: “It’s funny, I’m all seeing and all powerful, but that’s one of the few things I can’t make you do. That, and make you fall in love with me, and or stop you from killing yourself, and or make you drink orange juice for some reason. Anything else, yes, but go figure.”
