Wynonna Earp Season 2 Episode 5 Review

Each new Wynonna Earp episode just keeps getting better and more shocking. And the last episode was no different. So if you want to know what happened on it, here is my Wynonna Earp season 2 episode 5 recap.

Warning, spoilers ahead!

Mission of the week

At the beginning of the episode, it seemed that the mission of the week for Wynonna Earp season 2 episode 5 will be finding out more about the plate that Wynonna retrieved on episode 4. However, since the demon that was in Waverly for the first 4 episodes jumped into Wynonna, the episode quickly turned into trying to figure out how to get the demon out of Wynonna and kill it.

In the beginning, it seemed that the demon was fooling everyone because nobody really suspected there something being wrong with Wynonna. However, luckily that wasn’t the case and soon enough Doc stuffed the demon possessed Wynonna in the trunk of his new car and brought her to the Purgatory BBD headquarters to lock her up. Meanwhile, Dolls was discovering that as well, by interrogating a tied up Waverly.

It was interesting how it was revealed that Dolls and Lucado actually know the demon that has obsessed Wynonna. It’s called Mictian. In fact, Dolls might be the reason it’s here. Fortunately, that meant that they know how to defeat it as well. However, the mention that there hasn’t been a successful unbinding didn’t inspire much confidence into their ability to get the demon out of Wynonna and save Wynonna’s life as well.

Yet they still managed to do it, especially since Waverly’s life was at stake because the demon jumped back into the youngest Earp midway through this episode. Wynonna forced Waverly to drink the mixture to get the demon to leave Waverly’s body and Wynonna then killed Mictian using peacemaker, before the demon could fully fuse with Waverly. How’s that for a demon possession and our team working together again?

The Order, Juan Carlos, and other Purgatory’s supernatural beings

On Wynonna Earp season 2 episode 5 we got introduced to a new and never before seen supernatural entity – The Order. Who apparently own the plate that was in the silver briefcase from episode 4. And who are in the business of killing demons. Wynonna had a good point when she asked them where they were all season 1 when our team was fighting revenants all by themselves.

On top of that, we also go to see more of the mysterious Juan Carlos, who made his appearance on season 1, helping Doc, and then this season brought Dolls back to Purgatory. I have a feeling that he will eventually play a very significant role in everything that is going on in Purgatory. And the fact that he is played by Heartland’s Grandpa Jack himself Shaun Johnston is a nice perk.

As well as, although on this episode we didn’t see the creepy black-veiled widows that stole the Gardner sisters’ skins, they are still around, too. And judging by the promos for the next episode, on episode 6 we will finally learn who they are and what they want.

Wynonna Earp

Dolls full force

This was the first episode of season 2 where Dolls was truly himself and helping Wynonna again. And it felt better than ever. However, compared to season 1, season 2 Dolls seems less secretive and more willing to share his knowledge of the supernatural with everybody.

From season 1 we knew that Dolls has been around demons and other creatures for a while. However, I felt like this episode we finally learned a bit more about his demon-hunting background. On top of that, in this episode, we also learned a bit more about his relationship with Lucado and BBD. However, that was short lived, since Lucado’s skull exploded after she touched the black goo from Wynonna’s cut-off finger, and since Jeremy told Dolls that Black Badge is gone.

Where this leaves Dolls, Jeremy and the rest of the team is unknown, since, if BBD isn’t around anymore then there is no one to control them, but also no one to help them. I guess we will just have to wait and see.

WayHaught

And I can’t forget to mention WayHaught because Wynonna Earp season 2 episode 5 was seemingly a turning point for their relationship.

Waverly and Nicole’s relationship only really blossomed at the tail end of season 1. And since in the season 1 ender Waverly got possessed by Mictian, their relationship couldn’t really grow, even if neither Wavery nor Nicole really knew of the demon inside of Waverly. However, now that Waverly finally is Waverly again, hopefully, we will get to see more of WayHaught and more important developments of this relationship. And if the way Nicole protected Waverly for Wynonna was any indication, I’d say that will definitely be the case.

Last thoughts on Wynonna Earp season 2 episode 5

Can we just take a minute and talk about how amaze-balls was Melanie Scrofano on Wynonna Earp season 2 episode 5? Wynonna by herself is a little wacky yet totally bad-ass character. But this episode with the demon having possessed her she was on a whole new level. And so was Scrofano. All the little nuances of the way she played Wynonna and Gononna were brilliant. And we couldn’t have asked for a better actress to play the Earp heir.

Additionally, the moment when Wynonna found out she is pregnant was just icing on the cake for the performance Scrofano and Dominique Provost-Chalkley gave on this episode. And it also totally changed the game. Having a bad-ass female lead on a SyFy show, who is pregnant and still kicking ass and taking names? That’s revolutionary, modern and about time somebody dared to make it happen. So thank you, Emily Andras, for going there. You are amazing, you awesome woman!
