ABC’s Queens: Premiere Date, Cast, First Trailer & More

Where are my fellow girl group enthusiasts at?!

Growing up through the 90s and early 2000s, we had our fair share of girl groups to stan long before stanning was even a thing. Destiny’s Child, TLC, Bardot, and the Spice Girls, 3LW, Atomic Kitten, Sugababes, and later on in the 2000s, The Pussycat Dolls!

A lot of groups that were popular all those decades ago attempt to make a comeback several years later.

Sometimes this is something small like a surprise performance on a TV show or a guest appearance at a talk show, while in some cases it might even be a full-blown comeback tour. For Destiny’s Child, for example, it was a halftime performance at the 2013 Super Bowl!

One thing is for sure though: making a comeback in the music industry after years of being inactive is no easy feat.

In ABC’s newest upcoming drama Queens, we’ve got a musical on our hands – mixed in with a little nostalgia for the girl groups of our youth.

Now, here’s everything we know so far about the musical drama, Queens!

Who’s behind the show?

Zahir McGhee (Scandal) is the writer and executive producer of this project, with Sabrina Wind and Tim Story joining him as executive producers.

As a part of Disney Television Studios, ABC Signature is set to produce the series.

And as for the pilot episode, McGhee is credited as the writer with Story directing.

What’s Queens about?

Queens is, indeed, about a former girl group that made a big name for themselves in the hip-hop world during their peak in the 1990s.

Back then, they were known as the Nasty Bitches and they established themselves as empowering legends through their music.

Fast forward to the present, where the former hip-hop stars are in their 40s, estranged from each other and living relatively normal lives.

Now, they’ve reunited in the hopes that they make a comeback and regain the fame they once had more than two decades ago. Do they still have what it takes?

Who are we going to see in Queens?

One great thing about Queens is that the majority of its main cast – the members of Nasty Bitches – are icons in the music industry in real life.

Eve is a rapper and singer who is playing Brianna a.k.a Professor Sex; she used to rap about her glamorous lifestyle but she’s now a mother of five.

Naturi Naughton, a former member of 3LW, will play Jill “Da Thrill”: she had a troubled youth but is now a devout Catholic.

Singer/songwriter Brandy will play “Xplicit Lyrics”, the most musically talented of the group, though she failed to gain mainstream success after they disbanded.

And finally, model Nadine Velazquez is set to play Valeria “Butter Pecan”, the only member of the group still in the entertainment industry as a talk show host.

Taylor Sele is set to play the group’s manager Eric Jones. While Pepi Sonuga will play Lauren “Lil Muffin” Rice, a current superstar who finds the comfort and support she needs when she partners with the Nasty Bitches.

Queens is set to premiere on ABC on Tuesday, October 19th at 10/9 central. While Disney+ will debut the show in selected countries via the streaming hub Star.
