ABC’s The Baker and the Beauty: Release Date, Trailer, Cast & More

A US version of the Israeli original series which original Hebrew title translates to “Being with Her”, The Baker and the Beauty is a romantic comedy-drama series that is set to premiere on ABC midseason.

After international popularity following the original shows’ feature on Amazon Prime, an adaptation to one of Israel’s highest-rated scripted series ever, The Baker and the Beauty, features a Miami baker whose life changes when he finds himself in a relationship with an international superstar. The US version is being developed and executive produced by writer Dean Georgaris for Universal Television to be premiered on ABC on Monday, April 6th.

Who’s in charge?

It was announced in November of 2018 that an American adaptation of the series was being developed by Keshet Studios and Universal Television for ABC. Writer and producer Dean Georgaris (The Brave, Bluff City Law) wrote the new series. With Academy Award winner David Frankel (Teech, Grapevine) slated to direct the pilot.

Both Frankel and Georgaris also executive produce. Alongside fellow executive producers Avi Nir (Homeland), Keshet CEO Alon Shtruzman, Brillstein-Grey Entertainment President Peter Traugott, and producer Rachel Kaplan.

In January of 2019, ABC ordered the pilot and on May 11, 2019, ABC green-lighted the series. It was announced shortly after that the series would premiere in the spring of 2020.

What’s The Baker and the Beauty about?

This adaptation of the series follows the life of a Cuban baker. And the love story that brews after he meets and falls in love with a member of the social ladder royalty.

Daniel Garcia is a blue-collar Cuban baker in Miami who’s working in the family bakery trying to support his parents and siblings. But suddenly he’s thrown into the spotlight when a night out leads to meeting Noa Hamilton, an international superstar and fashion mogul.

Who’s playing who on the show?

The show will be headlined by Nathalie Kelley (The Vampire Diaries, Dynasty) and Victor Rasuk (ER and the Fifty Shades of Grey franchise). Kelly will portray Noa, model, actress, and owner of her own fashion empire. With Rasuk playing Daniel, the Garcia family’s eldest son set to inherit the family’s business.

Carlos Gomez (Friends, ER, and NCIS: New Orleans) will play Santiago Garcia, Daniel’s dad and the patriarch of the Garcia family. With his wife Mari being portrayed by Lisa Vidal (Third Watch, The Division, and ER).

Meanwhile, it was also announced that Emmy Award Winner Dan Bucatinsky (Scandal) will star in this romantic comedy series as Noa’s manager Lewins. As well as that Michelle Veintimilla (Gotham, Not Cool) will portray Vanessa. David Del Rio (Pitch Perfect, Grease) also joined the cast in March as Daniel’s younger brother Mateo. And Georgina Reilly (Murdoch Mysteries) is set to be a part of the cast as Noa’s best friend Piper.

We’ve seen many American adaptations to foreign counterparts before, from The Office to Skins to America’s Got Talent. And while the story of The Baker and The Beauty was beautifully executed and upliftingly inspirational in the original, time will only tell if the US version will live up to the hype. Luckily, we don’t have to wait long to find out since the show premieres on April 6!
